The chapel of Ellesija was consecrated by King Tuthmosis III in 1454 BC in Nubian territory between the first and second cataracts in the Nile, a region of commercial expeditions for luxury goods. The chapel of Ellesiya, along with other forts and temples, was destined to be submerged by the waters of the great artificial Lake Nasser created through the construction of the High Dam. The Egyptian state gave the chapel of Ellesiya to Italy in gratitude for its role in the international Nubian monument salvage campaign directed by UNESCO.
